What is an English Cream Goldendoodle?

The English Cream Goldendoodle starts with English Golden Retriever lines rather than American ones. English lines are known for pale cream coats, stockier builds, broader heads and a steadier, more mellow temperament. Cross that with a Poodle and you get the teddy-bear doodle so many families picture: plush, light-colored and calm. The History of the English Cream Goldendoodle

The English Cream Goldendoodle traces one half of its family tree to Europe rather than America. English (or European) Golden Retrievers were bred to a different standard than their American cousins: paler coats, broader heads, heavier bone and a notably steadier temperament, from lines that are often longer and better documented. Cross that Retriever with a Poodle and you get the pale, plush, teddy-bear doodle most families picture when they imagine the breed. Worth knowing: English Cream is not a color name. It describes the Retriever line standing behind the puppy.

Living with an English Cream Goldendoodle

Living with an English Cream Goldendoodle is a lot like living with any Goldendoodle. They are friendly, people-oriented and adaptable, and they fit easily into many kinds of homes and routines, from neighborhood walks and family outings to playtime in the backyard and relaxing at home.

Where families notice a difference is the pace. English Retriever lines have a reputation for a calmer, steadier temperament, and that has been our experience too: our English Creams enjoy a good walk and a game in the yard, then settle easily and are happy to stretch out nearby. Every puppy is an individual, though, and like every Goldendoodle, they love to be part of whatever the family is doing.

English Cream vs American Goldendoodles

If you are choosing between the two, it comes down to look and pace rather than quality. Both are Goldendoodles, both are friendly, and both are easy to train.

Choose an English Cream for the pale, plush teddy-bear look and the steadier temperament that comes with English Retriever lines. Choose an American Goldendoodle if you want the wider palette, from apricot and red through to black, or a slightly finer and more athletic frame.

The trade-off is choice and timing. English Cream litters come in three shades rather than six, and they are among the most requested puppies we raise, so the waitlist matters more here.

Temperament

English lines have a reputation for being calmer, and that matches what we see in our own house. We have said for years that our English girls do everything in slow motion, because that is simply their nature. They are affectionate, patient and easy to train, which makes them a strong choice for a first dog and a common one for therapy work. Individual personality still varies from puppy to puppy, which is exactly why we match puppies to families rather than working first-come, first-served.

Size

Our English Cream lines span the same size chart as our other Goldendoodles. Weights are estimates from the parents' combined average.

Color Preference

Coats we see in our English Cream Goldendoodle litters. Tell us on your application if you have a color in mind, and we will keep it in view when we match you.

A Poodle coat often lightens as a puppy grows, and there is no reliable way to predict which way any individual puppy will go. We would rather tell you that now than have you feel surprised later.
