What is a Bernedoodle?

Bernedoodles pair the Bernese Mountain Dog's loyal, mellow, people-loving nature with the Poodle's intelligence and low-shedding coat. They are gentle souls that adore their families, tolerate chaos with grace and carry the Bernese's signature tri-color markings into a lighter-shedding package.

Living with a Bernedoodle

If you want a dog that treats the couch as a family meeting place, this is the one. Bernedoodles are affectionate, a little goofy and famously patient with children. Ours come home socialized from daily life.

The History of the Bernedoodle

The Bernedoodle is a modern cross of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, bred to keep the Bernese's devoted, unhurried nature and its striking tri-color markings in a lighter-shedding coat. The Bernese half comes off the Swiss farms it worked for centuries, a draft and drover dog valued as much for its steadiness around a family as for its strength. The Poodle half brings the intelligence and the coat. What comes out the other side is a large, gentle dog with a farm dog's patience.

Temperament

Bernedoodles are known for their big personalities. They can be playful, goofy and almost comical one minute, then surprisingly gentle and easygoing the next. Their Bernese Mountain Dog side often brings a softer, more sensitive nature, while the Poodle adds intelligence, curiosity and quick learning. They tend to be observant dogs that notice what’s happening around them and may be a little more reserved with new people before warming up. Bernedoodles can also be slow to mature, so don’t be surprised if that playful, puppy-like personality sticks around for a while. They’re smart, expressive dogs with a fun mix of sweetness and confidence.

Size

Bernedoodles range from minis to standards at Lonestar. Standards carry the most Bernese presence, while minis pack the same personality into a smaller frame. Weights are estimates from the parents' average.

Tri-color minis are the fastest to reserve. Join the breed waitlist early if that is your dream puppy.

Color Preference

Coats we see in our Bernedoodle litters. Tell us on your application if you have a color in mind, and we will keep it in view when we match you.

A Poodle coat often lightens as a puppy grows, and there is no reliable way to predict which way any individual puppy will go. We would rather tell you that now than have you feel surprised later.
